Stefan Maria Rother loves being a photographer and meeting and getting to know people and places.

It all started with a trip to Scotland - to the Isle of Mull -  where he discovered his love for photography.

After his High-School degree in his hometown Essen, Germany, he moved to New York City in 1985 where he worked as an assistant to photographers like Rebecca Blake, Neal Barr and studied at the International Centre of Photography with Cornell Capa, Lynn Davis, Fred Ritchin, Harvey Stein and Sebastiao Salgado.

The next stop was Berlin, where Stefan studied analogue photography at the renowned Lette-Verein and graduated in the historical year 1989, when the Berlin-Wall fell.

The most important characteristic of a photographer is curiosity. And Stefan is curious: he photographed seniors dancing at the „Café Huthmacher“ right next to Berlin´s Zoo station, the emerging Techno-community in new clubs like „Tresor“ and „E-Werk“ as well as the art and music scene of the newly united Berlin.

Soon he was commissioned to photograph annual reports, commercial campaigns, travel essays for GEO-Saison and editorials for magazines like STERN, FOCUS, Spiegel, MAX, etc..

His interest in contemporary arts and music keeps him busy teaching photography as well as being a curator for the photography section of the Discovery Art Fair Cologne and Frankfurt.

Stefan Maria Rother manages the estate of Jewish photographer Martha Maas, whom he made publicly known again through his exhibitions at Lette-Verein Berlin, Kunstschacht Zollverein, Essen and through his publications about this fascinating personality.

Stefan lives in Berlin, is married to the musician Prof.Dr. Eva Beneke and father of two adult-children, Yolanda Rother and Raphael Rother, who in their lifes do, what they are called for.

Stefan Maria Rother ist Fotograf seit vielen Jahren und liebt diesen Beruf und die Begegnungen mit Menschen.

Angefangen hat es 1981 mit einer Reise nach Schottland - auf die Isle of Mull - wo er die Liebe zur Fotografie entdeckt hat.

Nach dem Abitur in Essen ist er 1985 nach New York City gegangen und hat dort unter anderem bei Rebecca Blake, Neal Barr assistiert und am International Center of Photography bei Cornell Capa, Lynn Davis, Fred Ritchin, Harvey Stein und Sebastiao Salgado studiert.

Dann folgte Berlin, wo Stefan am Lette-Verein die analoge Fotografie gelernt hat und 1989, im Jahr des Berliner Mauerfalls, das Studium abgeschlossen hat.

Die wichtigste Eigenschaft eines Fotografen ist die Neugierde. Davon hat Stefan genug: er fotografierte das Café Huthmacher am Bahnhof Zoo mit tanzenden Senior*Innen und den Club Tresor am Potsdamer Platz mit der neuen Techno-Gemeinde sowie die Kunst- und Musikszene Berlins.

Er erarbeitet Werbeaufträge, Geschäftsberichte und Reportagen für Magazine wie STERN, Focus, Spiegel, GEO-Saison, etc..

Sein Interesse an zeitgenössischer Kunst und Musik und seine Lehr- und Kuratierungsaufträge für die Discovery Art Fair Köln und Frankfurt, sowie die Traiagon-Akademie, die Music and Media School, sowie die Kunsthochschule Weissensee befruchten sich wechselseitig.

Stefan Maria Rother verwaltet den Nachlass der jüdischen Fotografin Martha Maas und hat diese vergessene Fotografin wieder bekannt gemacht mit seinen Ausstellungen im Lette-Verein Berlin, dem Kunstschacht Zollverein in Essen sowie Veranstaltungen und dazu gehörenden Buch-Publikationen.

Stefan lebt in Berlin, ist verheiratet mit der Musikerin Prof. Dr. Eva Beneke und Vater von zwei erwachsenen Kindern, Yolanda Rother und Raphael Rother, die beide das im Leben tun, wozu sie sich berufen fühlen.
